Actor Gene Hackman, his wife, Betsy Arakawa, 65, and their dog were found dead at their home in Santa Fe, New Mexico, on Wednesday.
Gene Hackman, one of Hollywood’s most celebrated actors, left an indelible mark on the film industry with his powerful performances and commanding screen presence. With a career spanning over five decades, Hackman became known for his versatility, starring in critically acclaimed films such as The French Connection (1971), Unforgiven (1992), and The Royal Tenenbaums (2001). Though he stepped away from acting in the early 2000s, his legacy continues to influence generations of filmmakers and actors.
Born in 1930, Hackman’s rise to stardom wasn’t immediate. After serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he studied journalism and radio before ultimately finding his passion for acting. His breakthrough came in the late 1960s with Bonnie and Clyde (1967), where he played Buck Barrow, earning his first Academy Award nomination.
His career-defining moment arrived with The French Connection, in which he portrayed the tough and relentless detective Popeye Doyle. The role won him an Academy Award for Best Actor, cementing his place among Hollywood’s elite. Hackman continued to deliver powerhouse performances in films like The Conversation (1974), Superman (1978) (as the infamous Lex Luthor), and Mississippi Burning (1988). He won his second Oscar for Best Supporting Actor in Clint Eastwood’s Unforgiven, proving his ability to master any genre.
Despite his enduring success, Hackman retired from acting in 2004 after Welcome to Mooseport, choosing a quiet life away from Hollywood. Unlike many of his peers, he never returned for a comeback role, instead dedicating his time to writing historical fiction novels and enjoying life in New Mexico.
Though he avoids public appearances, fans still revere his work, and his name frequently resurfaces in discussions about the greatest actors of all time. Even in retirement, Hackman’s influence on cinema remains unmatched, reminding audiences why he is truly a legend in the industry.
