Jack Dylan Grazer on Skateboarding and Acting

Last week I had the absolute pleasure of attending comic con in Nashville, Tennessee. This is the second comic con I had the opportunity to cover and was fortunate enough to have a few conversations with talent as well. Comic con is truly one of the most authentic events and communities to be apart of. It is a great way for fellow creatives, vendors and other fans who have traveled all over the country to share a common passion they have for entertainment.

Prior to attending the event, I looked at the roster of talent that would be at attendance for the weekend. One of the individuals that I saw on the list was Jack Dylan Grazer, a 21-year old actor who has held prominent roles in films such as IT, Disney Pixar's Luca, Shazaam, Stranger Things and many others. While most know Jack for these iconic roles, I noticed his personal youtube channel and Instagram feed shared a different side...fashion and skateboarding. Being featured on GQ and many others, I was curious as to where these passions stemmed from and what it's like being a young actor in the industry.

For those who have never been to comic con, essentially every talent has a designated space where fans can purchase autographs and photo ops throughout the course of the day. No surprise- Jack's table had a relatively long line but after waiting a few minutes, him and his team were kind enough to give me 5 minutes. Knowing I didn't have much time, I wanted to not only ask about his passion for skateboarding but hear his perspective on being a young actor in the industry and navigating the different roles he's had to commit too. "At the age of 12, I started skateboarding with other actors who skateboarded", Jack said. "Also kids at school that were way cooler and really mean to me... I felt like I had to be like them. Which I guess was a mistake looking back but I guess I had a real love for skateboarding and got bit by the bug real early. I love the culture, the friends I have been able to meet... I love it." Jack also noted he has a passion for solo sports saying he would also surf and participate in golf tournaments as well when he was younger.

After talking about sports, he gave insight on his profession as an actor. "I was talking to someone about most challenging aspects (being an actor) I few weeks ago. And not to sound narcissistic or self indulgent... but it is sort of like a psychologically,  sacrificial thing to do. When you want to be the best or be a great actor and walk away from a role you sort of had to transform for...it's hard to kinda gage who you are going to be after that...it's important to honor yourself and be careful and kind to yourself."

After the last few questions I did have to wrap up as few fans were behind me and even joining in on my interview (lol). However, in the short time speaking with Jack it was great to have an understanding of the hard work, maturity, humility and discipline that is necessary in order to consistently perform at high level while also hearing about his relationship with sports. Thanks again comic con for the invitation and hospitality over the two-day event!
